Weekend Update with QE 04/22/10

I enjoy weekends when I have shows on both Friday and Saturday. It doesn’t happen often enough but lately it has been more frequent. Tomorrow (Friday) I’ll be performing again in Murfreesboro, TN; this time at YEAH! (Youth Empowerment through Arts and Humanities). It seems like a cool spot. I’ve never been, but it appears that it’s an all ages spot geared towards youth. This is another way for me to invest down ;-) . I’m doing that show with my friend Details Details & a band called Ray Charles Death Tempo. Hey, why not? Check out this video of Details Details:

Then on Saturday the 24th, I’ll be going back to Clarksville, TN to play at The Coup. They are having their 2-year Birthday Party. I always have fun when I play out there. Everyone is always pretty nice and hospitable. I can’t really ask for more than that. Other than money. :-P Lots of other bands on that bill. It’s actually the second day of a two-day festival thing they’re doing. Nite Nite & Smokee B will also be performing.

If you miss out on these, I’m sure I’ll be updating on Twitter about them. So keep in touch. Be sure to subscribe to my blog so you don’t miss any!

It’s Better To Be Jazzy Jeff Than To Be The Fresh Prince

Some of you know that before I got into DJ-ing I was heavily involved in acting and theatre. So these days, I dream of one day having the time to go back into acting. I was reminded recently of this when I read Greg Rollett’s post on using music to launch another career. Who has done this better than most? Will Smith. You know him from DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, the first Grammy winners in the rap category. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was his highly successful TV show.

Then he had several successful movies in which he was the main star. Independence Day, Men In Black, Bad Boys. In addition to that, he had a successful solo artist career during the time he was in these movies. However, I didn’t really like his latest movies. I keep waiting on something that I’ll really care about.

But look at DJ Jazzy Jeff. He’s also a Grammy Winner. Also had a recurring role in the successful TV show. He went back to music; releasing records, rockin parties. He has been producing other artists, like Jill Scott and Maxwell. He also has been judging DJ competitions, helping the up-and-coming class. He’s also been an unofficial spokesperson (maybe he IS official) for Ableton Live.

What I like about his career, he’s still DJing and doing shows. At these shows, he’s seen as a legend. A LEGEND. I guess Will Smith would get a lot of people out to his shows if he went back to rapping. But would he have legendary status? Maybe he should, but I don’t think he would. What’s the difference? I think more than Will Smith, Jazzy Jeff has invested his time downward. Meaning, he spent some time being involved with other people who were learning to DJ and produce.

Investing down is a surefire way to build your legacy. Maybe it’s your kids. Maybe it’s ALL kids. Maybe it’s a beginner in your field of expertise. I suppose that Will Smith is investing down into his kids’ lives. That is admirable. However while Will Smith is seen as a star, Jazzy Jeff is seen as a hero.

So the question is, would you rather be a star? Or a hero? Let me know in the comments. If you liked this post, please share or retweet.

What If Blue Man Group Were DJs?

I get compared to Blue Man Group a lot. Sometimes, I try to think of what I can do to make my live show more dynamic like Blue Man Group. But then I started thinking, “what if Blue Man Group were DJs?”

Well, I know on their music tour; they traveled with a DJ, Mike Relm. The key to that, visuals. Check the video:

But there needs to be more. Blue Man Group uses a lot of props. So, they can’t just be stuck behind the decks all night. They need to come out and do something really cool. One guy who’s doing something like this already is RJD2. Look at this video when he puts on a spinning MPC harness.

So they are combining visuals, props, creativity…but what else? Maybe they could add 3d visuals to their show. I’ve never seen DJs do that, but I can imagine Blue Man Group giving everyone 3d glasses before their DJ set. Check out this band, Club of the Sons; who are already using 3d visuals at their live show.

Or maybe should just use very colorful visuals and project them on top of themselves! I have seen some bands do that to varying degrees of success. It would be a great addition to some slammin’ tracks. Would Blue Man have to wear all white though? Check out this band, Macrosick.

Whatever they did; I’m sure it would be pretty unique! I’m going to have to brainstorm some more ideas on what they might do as DJs so that I can know what I might do to be just as dynamic & interesting! Look at this!

Earn It. Keep it. Save It.

A few weeks ago, I released a track to my mailing list that I did for United Way here in Nashville. It’s called “Earn It. Keep it. Save It.” We got the title from a slogan that they use in their financial literacy department. It’s kind of a theme song for people to save their money. I got my friends James Fate, J. Prodigal, & Spoken Nerd to be on the track. They wrote great lyrics. When I showed it to United Way, they loved it and have sent it across the country to other UWs. We’re all pretty excited about it! So here’s the track:

and here’s a bonus: a nice article that someone wrote about the song!

Dark Lords of the Cupcake Forest remix

Spoken Nerd Apocalypse Awareness Day

My friend Spoken Nerd recently released his new record, Apocalypse Awareness Day. On that record, he has a sick track with Listener of Deepspace 5 called “The Dark Lords of the Cupcake Forest.” I guess it’s kind of a battle track for emcees in a mythological, video-game themed wonderland. Anyway, he did a remix contest for the song. I entered but didn’t win. I think you can hear the winning remix on Spoken Nerd’s myspace. However, you can hear my version right here:

And if you’re interested, you can hear the original song & you can download Spoken Nerd’s Apocalypse Awareness Day from his bandcamp page.
